미라 변광성(Variable star, Mira)

극대기를 막 지난 미라 (Mira, o Cet) 변광성. 밝기는 대략 2.3등급. 

미라는 2등급에서 10등급까지 변하는 변광성으로 가장 밝을 때에는 맨눈으로 관측이 가능하지만, 가장 어두울 때에는 맨눈으로 볼 수 없다. 변광 주기는 약 332일이다. 미라는 라틴어로 "놀랄만한 (wonderful)"이라는 의미를 가진다.

The variable star, Mira, is at or near its peak brightness (2.3 mag.). Mira, a Latin word that means “wonderful.” At its brightest, Mira is one of the whale’s leading lights, easily visible to the unaided eye. At its faintest, you need a telescope to see it. Mira (ο Cet) varies in brightness from almost 2nd magnitude to as faint as 10th magnitude with a period of roughly 332 days.
