Photometric power-law parameters H = 7.0 and 2.5n = 12.5. Heliocentric distance 1.6 AU < r. 

 

Total apparent magnitude m =  H + 5 log10 d + 2.5 n log10 r . 
Comets’ intrinsic brightness is usually expressed in terms of the absolute total magnitude H, which is related to the apparent magnitude m using the relation H = m − 5 log10 d − 2.5 n log10 r. Here d and r are the geocentric and heliocentric distances, respectively, and n is the photometric index, which strongly depends on the strength and nature of a given comet’s activity. For an inactive (asteroidal) body, n = 2. Often n = 4 is assumed for comets, leading to the  conventional absolute magnitude H10. However, comets show great diversity in their activity, and n indexes ranging from 1 to 10 have been reported for different comets (with even more extreme values on occasion). (Vokrouhlický, Nesvorný, & Dones 2019, AJ, 157, 181).

C/2020 F3 니오와이즈 혜성의 꼬리 길이. 

Tail lengths of the Comet C/2020 F3 NEOWISE.

이온 꼬리(Ion tail): 16°, 먼지 꼬리(Dust tail): 14°.

 

니오와이즈 (NEOWISE, C/2020 F3) 혜성의 꼬리 길이를 사진으로 대략적으로 계산해 보았습니다. 이온 꼬리(Ion tail)는 사진상에서 일부분만 찍힌 것 같습니다. 그래서 아마도 실제 이온 꼬리의 길이는 계산한 값보다 더 길것으로 예상합니다.

 

I have roughly calculated the tail length of Comet NEOWISE in the photo. Ion tail appears to have been partially photographed. So the actual length of the ion tail is expected to be longer than this value.

The brightest comets observed by ground-based observers since 1935.


The "peak m1" is the maximum observed total visual magnitude as seen by ground-ased observers. Only those comets brighter than fourth magnitude are listed below. Note that some comets have been seen brighter than listed below in spacecraft images when the comets were too close to the sun for ground-based observation.

Comet NEOWISE (C/2020 F3) moves out toward the center of the right in this time-lapse image from the ESA/NASA Solar and Heliospheric Observatory on June 22-27, 2020. The image of the sun at the center is from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory.
