Scorpius is one of the constellations of the zodiac. Its name is Latin for scorpion. It lies between Libra to the west and Sagittarius to the east. It is a large constellation located in the southern hemisphere near the center of the Milky Way.

Antares (α Scorpii, α Sco, Alpha Scorpii) is a red supergiant star in the Milky Way galaxy and the sixteenth brightest star in the night sky. It is the brightest star in the constellation Scorpius, and is often referred to as "the heart of the scorpion". The name seems to come from a Greek phrase meaning “rival of Ares” (i.e., rival of the planet Mars) and was probably given because of the star’s colour and brightness. Antares has a radius of approximately 700 times that of the Sun. if it were placed in the center of our solar system, its outer surface would lie between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. Antares is approximately 600 light-years (195 parsecs) from the Earth. Its visual luminosity is about 10,000 times that of the Sun.
