Did you know that March is the best month of the year for auroras? It's true. A 75-year study shows that March has more geomagnetically active days than any other month of the year. Geomagnetic disturbances are almost twice as likely in spring and fall vs. winter and summer. In short, cracks tend to form in Earth's magnetosphere during weeks around equinoxes, allowing solar wind to spark Northern Lights.
The best places to see the aurora borealis, or northern lights, are in the far north, near the Arctic Circle. This includes parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, Russia, Alaska, and Canada. Yellowknife, Canada, is the best place in the world to view the aurora borealis, also known as the Northern Lights.
