Astronomers find strongest evidence yet that Betelgeuse has a companion. Betelgeuse is a red supergiant star in the Orion constellation.  Its brightness changes periodically, and for decades astronomers had suspected that some of these variations could be due to a companion star orbiting around it. New analysis of observations taken in December 2024 confirm a stellar companion for Betelgeuse in the constellation Orion. Astronomers have used the Very Large Telescope (VLT) to image a companion star to Betelgeuse.

천문학자들은 베텔게우스에게 동반자가 있다는 가장 강력한 증거를 발견했다. 베텔게우스는 오리온자리에 있는 적색초거성이다. 베텔게우스는 주기적으로 밝기가 변하는데, 수십 년 동안 천문학자들은 이러한 밝기 변화 중 일부가 베텔게우스 주위를 공전하는 동반성 때문일 수 있다고 추측해 왔다. 2024년 12월에 촬영된 관측 자료에 대한 새로운 분석 결과, 오리온자리 베텔게우스 별에 동반성이 존재한다는 사실이 확인되었습니다. 천문학자들은 초거대망원경(Very Large Telescope, VLT)을 사용하여 베텔게우스의 동반별을 촬영하였다.
