This tour simultaneously glides through imagery from NASA’s Hubble and James Webb Space Telescopes of the Cat’s Head Nebula. The dust filament broadly remains the same in shape across the different wavelengths of light, but each view contains different details.

Hubble’s visible-light image shows the “cat” as an opaque, dark brown pillar with a glowing red eye—most likely a young star embedded in the dust.

Webb’s infrared observations reveal some of the cat’s structure and faint background filaments of dust to its left. In near-infrared light, Webb pierces through some of the dust to reveal many stars and even background galaxies. In mid-infrared light, the telescope images the emission from warm dust and carbon-based molecules excited by starlight.

웹 우주망원경의 적외선 관측을 통해 고양이 형상의 일부 구조와 왼쪽에 희미하게 보이는 먼지 필라멘트들을 확인할 수 있다. 근적외선 영역에서는 먼지를 투과하여 수많은 별들과 심지어 배경 은하까지 관측할 수 있습니다. 중적외선 영역에서는 별빛에 의해 여기된 따뜻한 먼지와 탄소 기반 분자에서 방출되는 빛을 포착한다.
